Timberlands have been intensively managed to produce commodity sawtimber and pulpwood products for decades.
Improvements in genetics and silvicultural technology are currently producing plantations with double the yield of those harvested 20 years ago, with the promise of additional gains over the coming generation. Advances in satellite imagery and data processing are poised to increase efficiencies in forest data collection and analysis. That should lead to improved prescriptions and lower operating costs. In many regions of the world, lack of management expertise and available capital inhibits the adoption of proven technologies. We believe these technology-inefficient markets offer exciting opportunities for us to add long-term value.
We also see exciting developments in markets for environmental values, many of which may benefit future timberland owners. New revenue streams from wetlands mitigation, carbon credits and certified forest products may be realized in the next few years. As a vertically-integrated timberland manager, RMS is working to stay abreast of these new markets and determine when and how to make the most of these opportunities.
